Hinge Digital Brings the Carfax Car Fox to Life in CG « Oregon ...

When Zimmerman Advertising approached Hinge Digital to bring the beloved Carfax Car Fox to life in CG, we jumped at the opportunity to apply our extensive experience in character development, animation, and visual effects to a national advertising campaign.

Building on a collaboration of several years on over 30 animated commercials, Zimmerman and Hinge began Car Fox’s character development in 2011. Working very closely with the agency and Carfax, Hinge created the spokes-character in CG to seamlessly integrate into the live-action. “We saw this as a unique collaborative opportunity—one that would give Carfax access to high-end vfx and allow Hinge to showcase its work in the national advertising arena.” said Roland Gauthier, Executive Producer.

Brita Pitcher Lid: Second Hinge Pin Failure « The Smell of Molten ...

Although that fix continues to work, the second pin failed pretty much as expected:

I glued the pin to rebuild the base, sheared the pin off, extracted the matching screw from the Tiny Vial of Teensy Screws, drilled a hole, and forced it in. This shot of the underside of the pitcher lid clearly shows that drilling the hole perpendicular to the edge doesn’t produce the proper alignment, but it works well enough:

SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images(DES MOINES, Iowa) — Seeking to build a sense of urgency for November, first lady Michelle Obama told a group of 400 campaign supporters in Iowa Tuesday that the election could come down to only a “few thousand folks.”

“I just want you to remember that in the end, this all could come down to those last few thousand people that we register to vote. It could all come down to those few thousand folks we need to help to get to the polls in November,” the first lady told the crowd of volunteers at a community center in Windsor Heights, a Des Moines suburb.

“I have said this before, Iowa, and you’ve heard me say it. He cannot do this alone. He needs you to help him,” she said.

Obama’s visit to the Hawkeye State — her second of the year — aimed to boost the campaign’s efforts to keep blue what is seen by both parties as a key battleground.

President Obama’s campaign has opened eight Iowa field offices and has volunteers organizing in each of 99 counties, officials said.

While Michelle Obama did not single out Mitt Romney by name, she exhorted her husband’s Hawkeye State surrogates to emphasize his “core” of values when appealing to voters.

“All you have to guide you are your values and your vision and your life experiences,” she said. “In the end when you’re making those impossible choices, it all boils down to who you are and what you stand for — and we all know who my husband is.”

As she did at a campaign fundraiser in Omaha, Neb., earlier in the day, Obama told supporters the stakes in the election are high, with the administration’s accomplishments “all on the line.”

“That’s what you need to tell people with ever door you knock on, with every call you make, with every conversation you have. You need to tell people our values. Tell them everything that’s at stake next November,” she said.

“You tell them how Barack was for tax cuts for working families and small businesses….Remember Barack had the backs of American workers.”

Hinge Digital Creates Digital Car Fox for Carfax «

When Hinge Digital was approached by Carfax, and Zimmerman advertising to bring the beloved Car Fox to life in CGI, we saw it as a great opportunity to bring our extensive experience in character development, animation, and visual effects to a national advertising campaign.

Zimmerman contacted Hinge in 2011 and presented the idea of bringing to life a fully digital Car Fox for their client Carfax.  Working very closely with Zimmerman and Carfax, Hinge took the challenge and brought the spokes-character into the 3D world. “We saw this as a unique collaborative opportunity—one that would give Carfax access to high-end vfx and allow Hinge to showcase its work in the national advertising arena.” said Roland Gauthier, Executive Producer.

Alex Tysowsky, Hinge Digital’s Animation Director, was intent on creating a digital version of Car Fox to perfectly match the live-action puppet previously used in the spots. To do so, he relied on his extensive film animation experience. He helped the rigging and animation teams accurately depict Car Fox’s physicality, personality and movements. “From the word ‘Action’ at the shoot, we knew we were going to be a part of something special,” said Tysowsky.

Michael Kuehn, Visual Effects Supervisor, guided the crew through asset creation, look development and live action integration of the digital Car Fox. Hinge’s asset development team modeled, shaded and lit the digital Car Fox using Autodesk’s Maya, groomed the fur with Shave and a Haircut, and made extensive use of Maya’s nCloth to design, define, and direct the properties of Car Fox’s clothes.  “developing CAR FOX’s new look in CG presented a great opportunity for our team to apply its feature-film expertise.”  said Kuehn.
