(More customer reviews)I'm building a complete set of kitchen cabinets in the frameless european style. As such, I needed some full overlay hinges. I was prepared to spend the money on Blum hinges, but I wondered if there was a less-expensive alternative. At about $2 per pair, I decided that it was worth taking a gamble and I ordered 15 pair.
They came quickly as has been my experience with Grizzley. I had never used european hinges before, so I was a little aprehensive. There are no instructions that come with these hinges. However, installation was pretty easy and the action of the hinges is precise with no slop or play.
I already had the requisite 35mm forstner bit and a template for Euro hinges which I got at a woodworking show.
I have a few installation tips.
First, the hinges come set at the extreme edge of their front-to-back adjustment. I recommend loosening the screw and setting the hinge plate to the middle of the adjustment range.
First, mount the hinges to the cabinet. I set the hinges to the open position and used the cup to register the hinge against the edge of the cabinet. Since the hinge is now adjusted to the middle, you have a little freedom for adjustment both in and out.
I used a Vix-type bit (also called a hinge bit) to drill the holes. These bits have a spring-loaded outer sleeve that centers the hole exactly in the hinge mounting plate. Definitely get one of these, it works like a charm. Then drive the screws to mount the hinges.
Lay the cabinet on its back and position the door on top of the cabinet and aligned it. Draw a small pencil line on the edge of the door right at the center of the hinge cups. Using a speed square, transfer the line to the inside of the door. Using the gauge against the edge of the door, mark the center of the 35mm hole. Drill the 35mm holes (a hand drill is fine, just be sure to get the depth right. It's easy to sneak up on the depth using the mounted hinges as a guide.
Separate the hinges to mount them to the door. to get them exactly aligned, place the door on a flat surface with the inside facing up. Place the hinge cups in the holes and place a straightedge against the two hinges. This will rotate the hinge cups in the holes so that the hinges are perfectly parallel. Using the Vix bit, drill the holes and mount the cups. This works reliably every time.
I learned that the exact width of the doors is important. For instance, I have a 24" wide cabinet with double doors. In order for the doors to clear other adjacent cabinets on the hinged side and for there to be a right-sized gap between doors, I needed to rip a bit off my doors (from the non-hinged edge!) so that each door was about 3/16 shy of 12" wide.
The hinges allow you to move the doors left-to-right about an 1/8 of an inch (when facing the doors).
All in all, I'm quite pleased. Four stars for exceptional value and decent function. The hinges lack the cool snap-on feature of the Blum hinges and you don't have the optional BlueMotion soft-close capability of the Blum hinges. But, hey, when you save $10 per pair of hinges, you have to give up something.
