While not being the depraved sex act one could easily assume it is, Hinge Finger is in fact the new imprint born from the minds of Will Bankhead, designer and founder of The Trilogy Tapes, and Joy Orbison. Late last year the pair announced their collaboration with a mix from Orbison that was full of unreleased treats, and maybe hinted at the type of material the label would be releasing, but with this first E.P it seems the two plan on taking the road less travelled, which is hardly surprising considering Bankhead‘s affinity for the experimental, and Orbison‘s championing of increasingly odd House productions. With this in mind Madteo is definitely the perfect candidate for which to launch Hinge Finger.
For a man who’s been operating in the public eye for 5 years, Matteo Ruzzon has only a handful of releases under his belt, including an album for Morphine and 12″s for Meakusma and Workshop, so a new offering from this maverick is always a welcome one. With the title track “Bugler Gold Pt. 1“, Madteo continues his explorations into super-deep, cyclic House experiments with a submerged approach that relies on a very sparse, but well crafted array of elements. “Biz ‘R’ Us (Whore Powers Resolution)” is a more abrasive affair that adopts clattering percussion and a blunt, thumping kick for a stripped back take on far-out Techno, while “Scream Seq.2″ slows proceedings up with an excursion into Beat Dimensions-esque Hip Hop, and hammers home the fact that Madteo has never been one to settle on an orthodox, one-style release. The final cut, “Xtra Loose Change” settles back into more weird House biz with Sensational (?) and Madteo himself introducing what sounds like a Marcellus Pittman record that’s gathered an inch of dust. All in all this is essential listening for those who like it rough but playful, and an excellent start to what is undoubtedly going to be a most interesting label.
