Typically when a party goes one way and fails, it tries to correct itself by going opposite way. In 2008, Republicans nominated a moderate in John McCain and failed. Now the Tea Party is pushing the party to the far right. Should Obama win re-election, we must consider how the eventual GOP nominee will impact the party going forward. If Santorum loses to Obama, Republicans will take a distinctly different path headed into 2016 than if Romney loses to Obama.
When the Republican Party moves to the right it helps Democrats.
While Santorum's nomination will help Democrats more in 2012, Romney's nomination may put Democrats in a better position in 2016.
