Question by : how to repair the jam of an entry door with glass pannels on each side?
I am a contractor & have hung hundreds of doors though it is not my strongest capability. I do more bathroom renovations & floors but think about myself a sturdy carpenter & hold a journeyman’s book in my neighborhood (carpenters union). With that said I began a repair yesterday & I did full the job nowadays, it should have taken 1 day.
The job was to repair an entry door jam. The wind blew the storm door to hard & broke the jam on the hinge side of each doors. It is a single entry door with a glass panel on every side- instead of a single entry door with sheet rock on every side giving me far more framing to secure the jam.
I wanted to replace the dog leg only (hinge side) & perhaps replace both dog legs but not the cross member on top simply because the cross member runs the whole width including both glass panels. Removing the complete jam, interior & exterior molding, both glass panels & threshold was a lot more than acquiring a new pre-hung door.
Once more this must have taken four to 6 hours but I just could not get it proper & would enjoy some suggestions. I had the door operating in just a few hours but not correct. From factory the existing hinges were not installed evenly. An straightforward fix & helped but could not get it.
Any tips ???
I do this for pay & feel I am extremely excellent at what I do. As a perfectionist I would like to have removed anything & replaced but that’s just not price efficiant & I can not afford to do what the customer is not paying for. I have carried out this prior to with no any problems, not this time.

In res ponce to central Virginia reptiles- I only have one issue with your post. The jam was that far gone ripped at the top & bottom from two pistons. And again, I have replaced 1 dogleg many instances with out any difficulties. A four to 6 hour job although I have only completed this with rock framing up to the jam. And I am familiar with Hardy’s & other wood fillers.
I don’t feel your post is un affordable & I can’t say your incorrect or disagree.
Much less than 3 weeks until x-mass, knowing the family members (3 children below 6) can not afford this. And I myself need to have the perform, I genuinely wanted to assist these guys.
In the end, I priced the job as low as…….- or as much as……… with a $ 200 range. I was able to save the door cosmetically in tacked for a total expense to the home owner of $ 600. The house owner could have received a new door for double.
I was asking if anybody had any ideas for this project. The well-liked conses of do it proper or don’t it is excellent advise though right after factoring in the other variables I spoke

Nicely id say im not a proffessional, ive installed 3 doors given that i was born.
But if removing everything (glass panels and all) gets the job done right go for it, id make certain the job is dont correct fr the client than carried out speedily, or speedily and right.

Replacing the hinge and Hinge pins on a Pacesetter Storm Door. First Get rid of the door from the property leave the screws on the outside of the door for final you will only need to get rid of the side with the hinge’s on .Appear on the inside on the hinged side for screws.
