Rhino/Razorback Hinged Doors | The Jeff Kingdom

I mentioned before that I had some big plans for my Space Marine Rhino/Razorback. One of those things was to hinge the doors on the tank. I managed to get this done and I’d thought I would discuss how I did it.

When I went looking online for tutorials on how to do this I found this one on The Bolter and Chainsword. That tutorial covers a lot of stuff including putting hinges on the driver’s hatch and on the Rhino’s top doors. All I really wanted was the side doors.

Cut out the doorway.

I started with the tutorial and cut out the door built into the one side piece.

Next, the tutorial wanted me to drill a hole through the plastic that was already there and use that for the hinge bracket. When I tried that I ended up just breaking off the little bit of plastic. So I had to try something else.

Remove plastic hinges and file smooth.

With one plastic hinge gone I decided to take them both off and clean the bottom of the door up with a small file.

Use a pin vice to drill holes in the frame.

Once the fake hinges were gone I used the door as a positioning guide for where to place some holes in the door frame. These holes would allow me to anchor the hinge to the frame.

Drill holes in the door.

I put the wholes in the frame toward the outside. On the door itself I needed a matching set of holes. This time, however, the holes needed to be on the inside.

Wrap wire around the paper clip 5 times.

Twist the wire ends together.

With the anchor points for the hinge set I went back to the tutorial for help on making the hinge itself. I started with wrapping 26 gauge wire around a paper clip 5 times. Then twisting the two ends of wire together. Doing this twice and then clipping the paperclip down to just that wire gives you the hinge itself. You’ll need to do this twice for each door.

Glue hinges into the door.

With the hinges made you can use super glue to secure the hinge post in the holes in the door. When doing this be very careful not to get any glue on the hinge itself. Something about how the wire is wound around the paperclip makes superglue flow through the hinge very fast. If that happens you’ll need to trash the hinge and make a new one. This happened to me and it was not fun.

Glue down hinge posts on the back side.

Once the glue dries then you can attach the door to the frame. For this just thread the hinge posts through the holes you made in the door frame. Then on the back side you can bend the posts down, glue them, and cut them. Again, be careful with the glue. I killed another hinge on this step too.

That’s really all there is to it. Now, I haven’t painted this yet. When I do I plan on doing it with the door open. I’m worried that if I did it with the door closed that I might either spray paint the door closed or get to much paint in the hinge and have it seize like super glue does. When I get to that point I’ll let you know how it goes.
