How do I hinge my wrists, When do I hinge my wrists, How long do I hold my wrists hinged? Why do I think I have to think about my wrists hinging?
I know it is a little tough to accept since we all were taught to actively hinge our wrists, then hold on until the last second, then actively throw the club head for speed. This is because traditional golf instruction is not aware that you can use your body mass and rotation to trap the ball (dynamically) for a more powerful, repeatable golf swing. I’m using the term dynamically as “In Motion”. Also, old school instruction does not know that using the hands to try to create club head speed will STOP THE BODY ROTATION every time, as the hands take over at the ball.
In my method, using the Large Muscles, the entire body works together. The shoulders wind up the swing, then the hips/body unwind the swing completely. Once you learn to let your arms and wrists react to the shoulders controlling the backswing, the inertia of the club/shaft at the top of the backswing will softly (automatically) hinge your wrists (correctly)… and then the hips unwinding pulling the arms down, will unhinge them at the right time. The more you practice the Straight Arm Drill (many repetitions), the more your hands/wrists will become submissive and you will experience this automatic action. It happens when you do nothing. If you try to use your hands to hinge or hold or hit, your body will stop turning and disrupt the natural athletic movement. Example, you don’t have to think about hinging your wrist to throw a baseball, a Frisbee or a basketball… it just happens. Key:… it takes practice to make a permanent change so it can be used at the golf course.
FYI: I hit 3-4 hundred shots a day into a net for 2 months just to get my hands out of my swing. I learned something every day and got better, every day… Ross
